Physics Building “Electronic and magnetic structure in clusters of atoms”
ABSTRACT:
Clusters of between 2 and 1000 atoms represent a middle ground between atomic and condensed-matter physics. These particles are general large enough to show complicated behaviors such as temperatures and materials phases, but small enough to exhibit remarkable finite-size and low-dimensionality effects. Our research focuses on the development of magnetic properties in metal clusters and on the time evolution of spatial and electronic structure in salt clusters. This talk will examine some of our most recent observations, including the complicated magnetism of chromium clusters and time-resolved measurements of thermal isomerization (shaping changes) in cesium salt clusters.

Physics Building “Understanding the Strong Interaction - Recent Progress and the Opportunities Provided by Jefferson Lab at 12 GeV”
ABSTRACT:
We review recent progress in determining physical hadron properties through experiments at Jefferson Lab and through lattice QCD. Lattice QCD is now able to deliver remarkably accurate results for some physical observables. We will discuss the mass of the nucleon and the strange magnetic moment of the proton as examples -- the latter providing a wonderful example of the advantages of the technical capabilities of Jefferson Lab. We also highlight the opportunities for new science with Jefferson Lab at 12 GeV, including its relationship to other major facilities planned worldwide in nuclear physics.
