PHYS 3620: Introduction to Condensed Matter Physics

An introductory course in Condensed Matter Physics. A semester of Quantum Mechanics is required and Thermal Physics is recommended. This course teaches the basic principles of simple theories that can be used to describe metals, semiconductors and superconductors. It serves as an introduction to crystallography and techniques to determine crystal/magnetic structures by making use of reciprocal space concepts. It directly applies phonon and lattice dynamics to solve problems not addressed in Thermal physics and expands on magnetism and type I superconductivity.
