Rotational Dynamics

Purpose:
To illustrate the role of centripetal force in rotational motion.

Equipment:
Rotation apparatus with various attachments (clear glass bulb, circular brass bands, sliding weights, closed tube for bouyancy).

Procedure:
Examine the behavior of the different attachments under rotation. Discuss centipetal and centrifugal forces. A broken centrifuge is also available (courtesy of Dr. J. Beams) to illustrate the results of inadequate centripetal force in an object undergoing extremely high rotational velocities.
