Gyrocompass

Purpose:

To demonstrate that a gimballed gyroscope maintains its orientation in space.

Equipment:

Large gyroscope, lazy susan stand, buffer wheel.

Procedure:

Bring the gyroscope up to speed with the buffer wheel and place on the lazy susan which is placed on the wheeled platform. Pull the platform around the classroom and note that the gyroscope maintains its original position in space.
