My current project entails controlling the separation of Rubidium atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) by exploiting the properties of the dipole-dipole force. We will control the minimum approach distance of two Rubidium atoms by exciting them to a repelling Rydberg-Rydberg potential curve using a blue detuned laser close to a Rydberg resonance. As the distance between the two atoms decreases, the atoms will push away from one another due to long-range dipole-dipole interactions.
