Fluid Mechanics: Preliminaries

The study of the motion of fluids is a very rich and beautiful subject which also has a large number of practical applications--aero- and hydro- dynamics, oceanography, and meteorology, to name just a few. In this section of the course I hope to introduce you to some of the basic notions of fluid mechanics, with the eventual goal of understanding how lift is generated by an airplane wing. However, we'll have opportunities to use this material repeatedly in the remainder of the course.
