PHYS 312: Widely Applied Physics II
This is part 2 of a new course sequence (311, 312) that is typically
taken by Physics BA majors, other science and math majors, and pre-meds
with a strong science background. It aims to give you a broad view of how
physics is applied in understanding a wide variety of phenomena, building
on your introductory physics background. This course is more
descriptive than the standard upper level physics courses, with
less emphasis on mathematical techniques.
- Classes: Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30--10:45,
Room 218, Physics.
- Problem session, offered at two times:
- Monday, 12:00 - 1:50, Room B22 Physics
- Tuesday, 1:00 - 2:50, Room B22 Physics.
Instructor:
Vittorio Celli, vc@virginia.edu,

Office hours: Wednesday, 1:00 - 3:00, Rm 311D Physics
TA:
Shane Frasier, Rm 311E physics, jsf9k@virginia.edu,

Textbooks:
You should own an introductory physics book (preferably Tipler: Physics
for Scientists and Engineers,
Volume 2
) and purchase one or more of the
recommended books.
I will distribute some lecture notes and keep a
class diary of topics and assignments.
Prerequisites: Physics 151 - 252 and Math 131, 132, and 221.
Physics 231 - 232 is not enough, unless you have taken Math 221 and at least
one Physics course beyond the 200 level. Exceptions are possible, but not
likely.
Physics 311 is not a prerequisite for Phys 312.
Your comments, questions, suggestions, and inquiries about this
course are welcomed.
