PHYS 312: Widely Applied Physics II
This is part 2 of a new course sequence (311, 312) that is typically
taken by Physics BA majors, other science and math majors, and pre-meds
with a strong science background. It aims to give you a broad view of how
physics is applied in understanding a wide variety of phenomena, building
on your introductory physics background. This course will be a bit more
descriptive than the standard upper level physics courses, with relatively
less emphasis on mathematical techniques.
- Classes: Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30--10:45, Room 218 Physics.
- Problem session, offered at two times:
- Monday, 12:00 - 1:50, Room B22 Physics
- Tuesday, 1:00 - 2:50, Room 205 Physics.
Instructor:
Vittorio Celli, vc@virginia.edu,
tel. 924-6573.
Office hours: Wednesday, 1:00 - 3:00, Rm 311D Physics
Grader:
Mike Robinson, mpr4q@virginia.edu,
tel. 924-7591.
Textbooks:
You should own an introductory physics book (presumably the one on which you
studied) and purchase one or more of the recommended books.
I will distribute some lecture notes and keep a
class diary of topics and assignments.
Prerequisites: Physics 311 or Physics 151 - 252 and
Math 131, 132, and 221.
Physics 231 - 232 is not enough, unless you have taken Math 221 and at least
one Physics course beyond the 200 level. Exceptions are possible, but not
likely.
Your comments, questions, suggestions, and inquiries about this
course are welcomed.
