DESCRIPTION:
This course is the research component of the research experience, curriculum enhancement, and leadership program for high school physics teachers and middle school physical science teachers (RECET). Teachers will spend five weeks working as part of a team on a science or engineering research project or on developing classroom demonstration activities. The objective is to provide the teacher with a hands-on research experience. The teacher is to translate this experience into more effective teaching in the classroom.

GOALS:
1. To actively conduct hands-on research.
2. Develop and improve computer-networking skills.
3. Develop skills to translate the teacher-research experience into more effective teaching in the classroom.

COURSE ACTIVITIES and DEADLINES:
1. Participants will conduct research daily and reportt weekly to Karyn Traphagen (klt3b@virginia.edu) via email on research progress. (15 %)
2. Participants will prepare a 250-word abstract on their research to be submitted by June 23, 2000. (5 %)
3. Participants will prepare an outline for a 10-minute talk with two parts: the goals of the research and your plans to transfer the knowledge back into the classroom. Due by July 14, 2000. (5 %)
4. Participants will prepare a design for a low-cost physics activity related to their research project by July 14, 2000. (10 % )
5. Research talk will be presented at UVa July 24 - 28. (15 %)
6. Participants will complete a double-spaced, font-size 12, report on the research by December 15, 2000. The length required is 10 pages for option 1, 15 pages for option 2, and 20 pages for option 3. (50 %)

EVALUATION:
A letter grade will be given based on the meritorious completion of all the above course activities using the weights in percentage given above in parenthesis.
