DESCRIPTION:PHYS 613 (3
graduate credits) Topics in Physical Science / Teacher Academy in
Physical Science (TAPS) at Jefferson Laboratory
This program is being offered as an enrichment course, intended to
increase teachers' knowledge of basic physics principles*. Although the opportunity for
sharing among peers is built-in, this is not the sole intent of the
course. You will:
be a student, and (hopefully much) learning will take place;
receive documentation of your participation, as hours may be used
toward state recertification;
be required to attend the program July 5 - July 29, Monday
through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – dismissal;
complete reading/homework assignments;
develop/tailor lesson plans related to the topics covered. Lesson
plans will then be shared with the class, so you will ultimately walk
away with a collection of physics lessons;
take a pre and post-test (for statistical purposes only);
follow project plans to design and build materials to use in your
science classes;
write a short paper on team-based research projects;
write an implementation plan to follow during the school year; and
complete follow-up questionnaires and participate in on-line
activities throughout the school year.

(TAPS) at Jefferson Laboratory click on TAPS.
GRADING:The Teacher Academy
in Physical Science can be taken for graduate credit through the
Department of Physics at the University of Virginia. The requirements
for taking the course for credit through the University of Virginia are
the same as the requirements of the TAPS program itself: a pre and post
evaluation test and an inservice (which will be in-class physics
lessons this summer). Upon registration you may opt to take the class
Pass/Fail or for a letter grade. I would recommend taking it for a
letter grade. Your final grade will be determined from the weighted
average of grades you receive from: class participation, and the post
test. You can use these 3 credits for recertification points or apply
up to a total of 6 credits of Phys 613 and/or Phys 640 toward the 30
credits needed at UVa for the Masters
of Arts in Physics Education Degree. See below for information on
Phys 640.
TUITION:Tuition cost is
$200 per credit hour for in-state teachers with the educator discount
rate.
For 3 credits the total cost is $600.
Tuition cost is $300 per credit hour for out-of-state teachers with the
educator discount rate.
For 3 credits the total cost is $900.
REGISTRATION:
PHYS 613
You may register
for Phys 613 online or call 434-982-5319 and register by
phone. Tuition will be accepted via credit card.
PHYS 640
If you have already taken Phys 613 (3 credits) last year, you may take
it this year as Phys 640, which is Independent Study for 3 or 6
credits. The tuition cost is proportional to the number of credit
hours. Permission is required from the instructor.
Email rlindgren@virginia.edu.
After receiving permission by email you may register by calling
434-982-5319. You can not register for Phys 640 online.
