Introductory Lab Instructor

Thursday, March 15 2012

The Department of Physics at the University of Virginia invites applications for a Faculty position with the academic rank of Lecturer to serve as Introductory Lab Instructor. This is a non-tenure-track academic position, beginning Spring 2012. The initial term of this appointment will be for three years with possibility of renewal contingent upon highly satisfactory performance. Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent in Physics or related field by the appointment start date and an aptitude and serious commitment to teach at the undergraduate level.

Our introductory labs serve a cohort of about 1000 students each in the fall and spring semesters and more than 100 students in the summer. The Introductory Lab Instructor has overall responsibility for the labs, ensuring that they are taught effectively and efficiently. The successful applicant will be expected to stay knowledgeable with new trends in student laboratory experiments and to update and revise the laboratory experiences as needed. The Instructor will be responsible for the laboratory manuals, providing student assignments, training approximately two dozen teaching assistants, communicating with the students, working with the laboratory support staff to setup and modify the experiments, and determining the final grades. Much of the job entails complicated logistics and requires attention to detail and willingness to do whatever is necessary to provide a successful student experience in the lab.
